Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort Set to Celebrate with November 2013 Kickoff

This one comes in the form of Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort's latest announcement. Starting Thursday, November 7th, 2013, they’ll be open for business.

For those of you that have yet to experience Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort’s wonders, this is definitely the year to get acquainted. That’s because the ski resort will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a series of special events. The kickoff weekend is expected to start bright and early on Thursday morning and continue until late Saturday night. The festivities on offer include a champagne toast, live music and two highly anticipated films.

The first film is none other than Oakley’s Jake Blauvelt: Naturally. You may remember seeing the teaser. It’s replete with scenes of Blauvelt shredding some of the world’s best backcountry powder. During the film, Blauvelt is joined by a few of his fellow snowboarding phenomenon's. Among them are Eric Jackson, Shayne Pospisil, Kazu Kokubo and Freddie Kalbermatten.

The second film is Level 1 Productions’ Partly Cloudy. Featuring a series of the sports’ hottest skiers, its trailer was released last summer via Powder Magazine. Since that time, skiers across the globe have been anxiously awaiting its full release. Some of the tremendous athletes that appear in the highly anticipated film are Will Wesson, Tim McChesney, Ahmet Dadali, Adam Delorme and Parker White.

Of course films, champagne and live tunes are not all that Mammoth Mountain has to offer winter sports enthusiasts. It’s got a serious amount of powder, tons of trails, white knuckle elevations, on-mountain dining, wicked terrain...

Eastern Sierra Communities: Celebrate Autumn in June Lake

Grab your cameras and bring your appetite, it’s time to celebrate the arrival of autumn in one of the most charming Eastern Sierra communities around, June Lake.

Located along the Mono Basin’s rim at an elevation of 7,600 feet, it’s a perfect place to spend a day or a lifetime.

Start your day in June Lake with a bountiful breakfast at the Tiger Bar & Café. Its home to some of the best blueberry pancakes, Belgium waffles, eggs and chicken fried steak around. Then hop aboard a helicopter with SkyTime’s aviators and take a bird’s eye view of the resplendent foliage. While you’re flying over the area, be on the lookout for abundant wildlife and waterfalls too.

When you’re finished marveling at the landscape from above, strap on your hiking boots and channel your inner Ansel Adams. That’s because there are plenty of beautiful spots to explore on foot in the nearby Ansel Adams Wilderness. It sits nestled between the Sierra National Forest, Yosemite National Park and the Inyo National Forest.

There are several spots to enjoy a day hike or backpacking within the June Lake Loop Ranger District. The Glass Creek Meadow Trail will take you to the famed behemoth known as the Obsidian Dome. For rock hounds and geology buffs, it’s truly a sight to see. However, if volcanic rock isn’t your passion, the Bloody Canyon or Rush Creek Trails may prove to be the better options. Just be ready for a workout and stay alert for signs of bear activity. June Lake is also a great place to take your kids to enjoy the water and rent a pontoon boat...

Sapphires Hidden In The Mountains: Exploring North Mono County

Sapphires Hidden In The Mountains: Exploring North Mono County

Mono CountyProfessional photo by Steve Dutcher Photography 760.920.9127

One of the distinct advantages of living in Bridgeport or elsewhere in North Mono county is the quick access to one of the most beautiful cluster of lakes in the country. After you pass the iconic tufa towers that line the shores of Mono Lake, turn left at Virginia Lakes Road when you reach Conway Summit. The road will take you into the mountains to Virginia Lakes Resort, and, a few minutes later, you will find yourself in high country paradise.

Besides the towering snow-capped peaks, picturesque summits, and thick pine forests that encircle you, this area has become well-known for its abundance of lakes. Like sapphires and emeralds tucked into little valleys between the mountains, the lakes are everywhere. The bright shimmer of sunlight hitting the water catches your eye the moment you arrive at what the locals affectionately call "the lodge," which has a small general store, a tackle shop, and a rustic cafe.

Two lakes, the Little and Big Virginia, sit a short distance from the lodge's large wooden porch. Another lake, Trumbull, lies within walking distance. All three lakes sit at the foot of large mountains with wide sweeping slopes and snow-capped peaks.

The Summit Trail hike, a popular trail at the resort, is one of the best ways to see many of the area's most beautiful lakes. The trailhead begins at the end of Big Virginia Lake's large dirt parking and takes you on a five mile (round-trip) journey into some of the most stunning scenery in the High Sierras. Some of the things you will see include:

  • Blue Lake: the first of the alpine lakes on this trail and true to its name, its sparkling hue varies...

Consumers Grow in Optimism Toward Home Prices

Uncertainty over the fiscal cliff negotiations did little to shake consumers’ confidence about housing in December, according to the results from Fannie Mae’s latest National Housing Survey.

Consumers continued to show increased optimism toward home price, rental price, and mortgage rate expectations, a sign that home purchase activity may see a boost in the coming months.

“Combined with consumers’ growing mortgage rate and rental price increase expectations, the positive home price outlook could incentivize those waiting on the sidelines of the housing market to buy a home sooner rather than later and thus support continued housing acceleration,” said Doug Duncan, SVP and chief economist at Fannie Mae.

The average 12-month home price change expectation jumped from 1.7 percent in November to 2.6 percent in December, the highest level since the survey’s inception in 2010. To compare, the average price change expectation a year earlier was only 0.8 percent.

The share of respondents who believe home prices will rise over the next year also reached its highest recorded level, increasing 6 percentage points to 43 percent. The share of those expecting price declines fell to 11 percent, while the share who believe prices will stay more or less the same fell to 40 percent.

Twenty-one percent of respondents said now is a good time to sell, a decrease of 2 percentage points from November’s record high but still 10 percentage points above the December 2011 survey. The number of respondents who said now is a good time to buy decreased slightly to 71 percent, staying within the small range seen throughout 2012.
